On April 1, 1857, American Henry Crabb arrived in Caborca with 103 comrades in arms. Displaying their own flag that bore the words "Westward Ho," their apparent intention was to claim Caborca and surrounding territories for the United States.

The local inhabitants defended and held the town from within the church at Pueblo Viejo for six days, until federal troops arrived to end the battle on April 6th. The intruders were executed by the Army, and it is rumored that Henry Crabb's head was placed atop the church.
The name of the town was changed by an act of law in 1948 to Heroica Caborca, to recognize the heroic efforts of the townspeople in their defense of Caborca against the Americans.
