Caborca Tourist Police

No, they're not out to arrest tourists. This special unit of police officers in their specially marked vehicles and distinctive green shirts speak English and are there to assist visitors to Caborca. So if you have questions or need assistance, just flag down one of these friendly tourism ambassadors.

New Mexican Customs Inspection Station East of Pitiquito

The "Garita Caborca" inspection station, located to the east of Pitiquito, is for the inspection of eastbound traffic from Pitiquito and Caborca. Since Caborca is at the east end of a free-trade zone (with relaxed importation restrictions) that stretches west from Caborca to the coast and north to the U.S. border, the station serves the same function as a customs station at the U.S./Mexico border, or at a 21 km customs station.

Hassle-Free Sonoran Highways

In an apparent attempt to make driving in Sonora more appealing to visitors from north of the border, the state of Sonora has posted "Hassle Free Vehicle Zone" signs on major highways, starting at the 21 km checkpoints and extending into Sourthern Sonora. Not sure if this was accompanied by a change in policy, but as someone who has driven Sonoran highways for years, I've never felt hassled. In fact, in the two encounters I had with federal highway police in Sonora, one was to see if I needed assistance while pulled over on the side of the highway, and in the other a group of federal officers actually helped me change a flat tire..
